Job Description

TheAssistant Athletic Director-Communications(AADC)overseesathletic department web pageand social media platforms, supervisesall gameday game managementstaff and compilesand distributesconteststatistics for all team competitions to meet NCAA and GNACrules and regulations. Works closely with the Director of Athletics and athletic department staff to promote Saint Martin’s University athletics. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following.

EVENTS

Assist in the coordination of on-campus and off-campus athletic events (games, invitationals, tournaments, etc.) Hire, train and schedule game-day staff (announcers, statisticians, scoreboard operators, clock operators, and video staff.) Oversight of ticket process for all athletic events. Work with other universities’ Sports Information Directors to satisfy team and sports information needs for home and away games.

INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

Compile and distribute sports statistics for all team competitions to meet GNAC and NCAA requirements. Taking game statistics from each contest home and away and submitting them meeting the established timelines. Compile statistical information and convert to appropriate format for web and other information sources. Upkeep of rosters, schedules, scores and stats. Upkeep of coaching biographies and records and staff bios. Archiving of season and cumulative stats. Collaborate with coaches and director with community service projects. NLI coordination for stories during the year.

MEDIA/COMMUNICATIONS

Ensure athletic events are regularly presented to the media. Report game scores and events to local newspapers, TV stations and electronic media. Work with all coaches and the Athletic Director to release team information at the appropriate time to media outlets. Coordinate with coach’s information for press releases, post-game quotes, and special interest stories involving student athletes. Develop means and ways of getting sports information to staff, athletes, media and alumni. Work closely with marketing & communications and IT department to effectively produce top quality resources for disseminating sports information. Design and produce schedules, game day flyers, programs, and other printed material regarding the teams, games and events. Produce quality written materials for release to media outlets and conference office. Responsible for running social media platforms for SMU athletics including but not limited to: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.

WEB SITE

Maintain and develop the athletic department web page. This may mean adding current scores, providing information about players and games and promotion of upcoming contests. Ensure the information and presentation of web site accurately reflects and communicates the mission and testimony of athletes and Saint Martin's University. Perform daily upkeep of season previews, outlooks, and home pages. Upkeep of content and athletically related stories. Maintain relevant and appropriate information on athletic department and staff. Ongoing evaluation as to the effectiveness of information and content communicated. Timely reporting of athletic events, upkeep of history and general information. Schedule team and individual pictures to post on website.

INTERNS, GRADUATE ASSISTANTS, & VOLUNTEERS

Recruits, supervises and mentors interns, graduate assistants and volunteers essential to producing content. Pursue strategies that will expand the reach and impact of this area.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

Leads the SMU Hall of Fame Committee. Assist athletic director with responsibilities for schedules, rosters, and record keeping. Works with coaches and athletic staff to develop game promotions for SMU home games. Explore ways to monetize this content (through sponsors, through paid viewership, branded/promoted content)

COMPETENCIES

Demonstrates knowledge of GNAC and NCAA rules and regulation. Thinks critically about sports information and the role it plays in accomplishing the goals and mission of Saint Martin’s University. Evaluates internal controls and means to provide the most effective communication of sports information to staff, athletes, alumni and media. Composes athletic reports and stories at a media worthy level. The ability to produce quality materials for release to media outlets meeting strict deadlines. This entails working with on and off campus groups. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with complex information and situations required. The ability to communicate with a wide variety of people from student athletes, boosters and the outside community. Possess the skills to problem solve and start projects requiring the ability to work independently or in a team situation providing leadership and direction. Must be supportive of a Catholic, Benedictine philosophy of education.

REQUIREMENTS AND/OR CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field. Experience working in a sport media position requiring previous interaction with athletic teams, coaches, athletes and media outlets preferred Successfully pass a criminal background check. Experience working with StatCrew, InDesign, Photoshop, Microsoft Office

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a standard office environment and at indoor or outdoor events. Physical demands include: Moves objects (less than 20 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet). Communicates orally with athletes and the general public in a group setting (gives instructions, information and responds to questions). Must be capable of working in a stressful work environment. Must be able to report to work on time according to a schedule. Must be capable of working and communicating effectively with coaches and staff. Draws or charts, schedules, graph. Uses graphic instructions, schematic drawings, layouts, or other visual aids. Measures distance using a tape measurer calibrated instrument. Lifts arm above shoulder level. Coordinates the movement of more than one limb simultaneously Bends or stoops repeatedly or continually over time. Operates a motor vehicle requiring a standard Driver’s License. Moves light objects (less than 20 pounds) short distances (20 feet or less). Comprehends and makes inferences from written material. Ability to be mobile campus wide for appropriate business needs.
